Native Americans
Long before this area became Clayton County, it was
home to The Creek Indians, also known by their
original name Muscogee (or Muskogee), an
American Indian people originally living
in southeastern United States.

The early historic Creeks may have been descendants of the mound builders of the Mississippian culture. They lived in river valleys throughout Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia, particularly in areas south of today’s

Interstate I-20. The Creeks consisted of many ethnic groups speaking several distinct languages.  The Creek Indians left behind a rich legacy that enhances the history and culture of Clayton County today.
