Heritage Trail

The history of Clayton County includes
the heritage of  many cultures including
Native American, African American,
Irish American and European settlers
and is a source of great history and pride.

Stories of great battles and compromise come from the Muskogee tribe who first inhabited the County.  Alonzo Herndon first set up shop as a barber in Jonesboro before opening Atlanta Life Insurance Company in 1905 and becoming Georgia’s first African American millionaire.  Clayton County’s most famous Irish Americans were Margaret Mitchell’s family, the Fitzgeralds.  As the author of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel, Gone With The Wind, Mitchell continues to bring worldwide fame to the County.
